Canadian Experience Class Candidates Receive 500 ITAs in Second IRCC Express Entry Draw This Week

Canada’s immigration authority, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), has released the latest results from its Express Entry draw. In this round, 500 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) were sent out, exclusively targeting candidates from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). To qualify, applicants needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 539. Earlier in the week, IRCC invited 1,613 candidates from the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), where the minimum required CRS score was 739.

The previous draw on September 19 focused solely on CEC candidates, issuing 4,000 ITAs to those with a minimum CRS score of 509. This score reflected a slight increase from the August 27 draw, which had a cut-off of 507. CEC draws have been notably frequent this summer, with IRCC distributing 21,800 ITAs to CEC candidates since July.

This aligns with IRCC’s plan to conduct more “domestic” draws to reduce the number of temporary residents and meet its permanent residency targets for the year. The current draw marks the second one held this month. Last year, IRCC hosted four Express Entry draws throughout October, inviting a total of 9,173 candidates.

Understanding Express Entry

Launched in 2015, Express Entry is a system designed to streamline the process of selecting skilled workers for immigration. It manages applications for three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

Express Entry uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to score candidates based on key factors, including work experience, education, age, language ability, and occupation. Candidates can also earn extra points for factors like having a spouse, sibling in Canada, or Canadian work and education experience. A higher CRS score boosts a candidate’s chance of receiving an ITA, but the required score can vary depending on the specific draw.

Category-Based Selection Draws

Since May 2023, IRCC has introduced category-based selection draws, which generally have lower CRS score requirements. These draws are designed to address specific skill shortages in the labor market.

The six categories are: Healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Trades, Transport, Agriculture and agri-food, French language proficiency

These categories were selected after consultations and analysis of labor market demands. One of IRCC’s goals is to ensure 6% of all newcomers settle in French-speaking communities outside Quebec. While category-based draws often have lower CRS thresholds, candidates must still be in the Express Entry pool, and a higher CRS score remains an advantage.
