4 New English Language Tests are Approved by IRCC for the Student Direct Stream

4 new English language tests are approved by IRCC for the Student Direct stream. These new test results will be accepted by IRCC from 10 August 2023.

Below mentioned tests are eligible for Student Direct Stream (SDS) applicants:

  • CAEL
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT Test
  • CELPIP General

Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing are the abilities that must be demonstrated by the test results. Improving language proficiency is among the Top 10 Things You Should Do Before Moving to Canada.

A score that is equivalent to the Canadian Language Benchmark of at least 7 must be shown by CELPIP general tests in each of the 4 language-speaking abilities.

A minimum score of 60 must be shown by CAEL and PTE academic test results. A minimum score of 83 is required by Educational Testing Service (ETS) TOEFL iBT test.

These tests must be taken by students in-person, as for SDS applicants, remotely proctored or online tests will not be accepted. The only tests approved by IRCC for SDS applicants were IELTS Academic and IELTS General, prior to this change. What is Student Direct Stream?

For students from specific countries, expedited processing of study permits is offered by the Student Direct Stream. Eligible students are legal residents of India, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Trinidad and Tobago, Pakistan, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Morocco, Philippines, Peru, Senegal, or Saint Vincent and Grenadines.

For all study permit applicants eligible for SDS, there is a service standard of 20 days. Among Indian international students, Student Direct Stream which was launched in 2018 is very popular.

Eligibility for Student Direct Stream

Students who meet this criterion must also present a conformational document for the upfront medical exam of the applicant, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) as of $ 10,000, a copy of a letter of acceptance from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of language test results completed within two years of the SDS application demonstrating an IELTS score of 6 in English or NCLC 7 for French, proof of payment of tuition fees in the first year of study, and submission of application at a Visa Application Centre (VAC), in addition to being legal residents of specific countries.
