Why do more people than ever want to immigrate to Canada?

Canada has been polled to be the second most popular destination after the United States for people who want to migrate abroad for the very first time. Global analytics and advice firm, Gallup released data on this topic for the first time since 2018. 900 million people would move to another country permanently, given the chance in 2021 as stated by the poll. Do you know how many people want to Immigrate to Canada?

Since the farm began to collect data in 2011, this is the highest percentage recorded. There was an increase in the number of overall people who would like to move to another country permanently from 12% to 16%, between 2011 and 2021. There was also a decrease in the number of people who would like to leave their home country throughout East Asia and the European Union. People’s desire to migrate was not deterred by Covid-19 as suggested by the data.

It is very evident from the movement of immigrants after the pandemic travel restrictions begin to ease. For example, net immigration exceeded 1 million residents in the United States between the years 2021 and 2022.

Immigrate to Canada as it is gaining popularity

Over the past 5 years, Canada has become a more popular destination for people who want to immigrate as 8% of respondents clarified their will to move to Canada rather than the United States. Not long after Donald Trump was elected as the president of the United States, the trend started around 2017. Many abandoned the United States as an immigration option after his anti-immigration stance. Now we will discuss the count of people who want to immigrate to Canada.

The count of people stating they would choose Canada over any other country spiked from 5% in 2011, to 8%. The number of immigrants who would choose the United States over any other country also dropped in the same period from 22% to 18%. Canada still is in second position for immigrants even though only 8% of people preferred it over any other country with the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Australia, and Japan are all between 3% to 7%.

In Sierra Leone, there is the highest percentage of people (76%) who would consider migrating to any other country, Lebanon has the second highest percentage at 63%, outstripping Afghanistan’s 53%. The highest overall increase in people who would consider moving permanently to another country was still Latin America and the Caribbean, showing a 19% increase between 2011 and 2021. In Honduras, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic, more than 45% of respondents would immigrate if they have the opportunity.

There is a difference between people who would like to leave their home country and those who do so, as noted by the poll. Circumstances such as family, finances, and job opportunities affect many people who are willing to migrate, and as a result, they are never able to leave their country.

Canada is seeking more immigrants

Well-publicized immigration targets of Canada are likely a factor in its popularity as a destination for newly arrived people. Immigrate to Canada due to Canada’s low fertility rate, the aging workforce has caused a chronic labour shortage, for which immigrants are needed to fulfill the vacancies. Canada would not have a large enough tax base to maintain social services such as healthcare and education without the contribution of immigrants.

Canada releases an Immigration Levels Plan that sets the target for the number of new permanent residents the country plans to welcome from any of its immigration pathways in a given year, each year in response. Canada welcomed over 437,000 permanent residents in 2022. For 2023, the target is set higher to 465,000 and increases per year up to 500,000 by 2025. Canada will need to invite more newcomers and process applications more rapidly to meet these targets. A less stringent immigration process than other countries may be seen in Canada, that’s why people should immigrate to Canada.
